Am I eligible to apply for further stay as a tourist?

You "may" be eligible to extend your ETA Visa whilst you are in Australia, however, strict rules do apply. If you are out of time or are unable to get the extension, we recommend that you may be able to travel to New Zealand for a few days and then return to Australia using your existing ETA Visa (conditions apply).

You may only submit your application using this electronic form if:

  • you are in Australia; and ...
  • you hold a valid tourist Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, Visitor) or a Tourist visa that was initially granted for a stay of 3 months or less (granted offshore); and ...
  • your visa does not have a Condition 8503 - No Further Stay attached; and ...
  • you wish to extend your stay in Australia for a further period so that the total duration of your stay in Australia is less than or 6 months from the date when you last entered Australia; and ...
  • you pay the application and processing fee
and
  • your intention to visit Australia is genuine; and
  • you do not intend to work or study; and
  • you have complied, and will continue to comply with the conditions of your visa to Australia; and
  • you are of good character; and
  • you are in good health and do not have a dangerous or contagious disease. If you are from a very high tuberculosis risk country or have spent more than three months consecutively in the past 5 years in a very high tuberculosis risk country, your application will be referred after submission to an Australian office of this Department and you will be required to undergo a chest X-ray. The cost of the x-ray may be up to $350. This cost will vary from state to state and is separate from the visa application charge.
  • Countries defined as very high tuberculosis risk are listed in form 1163i Health requirement for temporary entry to Australia.
  • You may include in this application any children under 18 years of age included in your passport and in your current visitor visa, and who are in Australia with you.
  • Those on a separate passport must complete a separate ETA application form.

A decision on your application will be made on the basis of all the information you provide, your circumstances at the time the application is made, and the legal requirements which apply at that time.

When should I apply for a new visa?

You must apply for a new visa before your current visa expires. The best time to apply for a new visitor visa is about two weeks before the expiry of your current visa. Please bear in mind that the grant of a new visa will terminate any visa currently held and the entitlements attached to that visa.

What to do if you cannot get an extension ?

Firstly, remember that your current ETA is valid for 12 months* and allows multiple re-entries into Australia.

What you can do is pop over to New Zealand or HK, or Fiji for a few days holiday and then return to Australia giving you another 3 months.
